Precision Shape-Shifting Silicone Tubing is a Reality
Published in the January, 2010 issue of Medical Design Technology

Geo-Trans® is a patented process that enables the cross sectional profile of a silicone tube to change "on the fly" during extrusion. The process was invented and patented by Specialty Silicone Fabricators (SSF) in 1996. The technology was originally developed to improve closed wound drainage products. Today, the far-reaching medical, mechanical and manufacturing advantages of transitional extrusion are well known. The process eliminates any secondary bonding operations to mate different tube profiles, thus significantly reducing costs. Download Article (PDF)

A device's packaging is a critical component as it can protect it, keep it sterile, and help prevent tampering. However, for medical device designers, it is easy to overlook this aspect of the device and either come up short on what's needed or over do it and use too much packaging.
